30-Day Clean Eating Challenge

My husband, Gary, and I are starting a 30-day clean eating challenge today. Wooo! I'm actually excited. We're going to feel better, have more energy, and generally be able to live life better because of these changes.

We were both pretty healthy during our TTC months (well...he was pretty healthy, and I was obsessively healthy). I kept those habits during pregnancy, and then afterward, once my baby was here and healthy as can be, I went a little crazy and indulged enough to make up for all the times I didn't indulge. Plus, when there's a little one always in my arms, grabbing quick, convenient foods is way easier.

But Gary and I decided, yesterday, we need to be healthier. Because he just doesn't like most healthy foods, and because I'm addicted to sugar (mainly s'mores), we need some kind of fun challenge to get us back on the straight and narrow.

So we came up with our own 30-day clean eating challenge that's achievable.

First thing's first. We got on the same page about what clean eating means.

According to Fitness Magazine, "At its simplest, clean eating is about eating whole foods, or 'real' foods — those that are un- or minimally processed, refined, and handled, making them as close to their natural form as possible."

Our main focus is avoiding refined sugars, but we're also staying away from most packaged foods.
After we got that cleared up, we thought of an incentive.

If we stick to clean eating for 30-days, we get to go on a special, celebratory date! If either one of us messes up, not only do we lose out of the date for ourselves, but we'll be letting each other down. That's a major motivator. We win together or lose together!

But we're also being realistic.

The goal here is to be healthier, not perfect. And since we're starting out pretty far from healthy in the first place, we need to be honest about cravings and willpower and all that. So we both get two mess ups, and we get passes on special occasions since there are a few celebrations in June. That's a lot of leniency, but it's where we are.

Day one, here we go!
